About

The Hobby Farm is a blog is dedicated to small scale agriculture and sustainable living.  As the author of this blog, I was looking for a way to organize and share my interests which all seem to be loosely related.  Some of the topics that you will find discussed here on my blog include:

Container Gardening

One of my biggest areas of interest is in sustainable agriculture, or working towards a goal of relying less on commercial food production and chain grocery stores to provide food for me and my family.  I have only been working on this for the past year and while my gardening efforts do provide some supplemental food, my plants are not really to prime bearing age yet.

Urban Livestock and Small Acerage Livestock

While not exactly the same thing, I am fairly interested in both the application of Urban Livestock and more so the use of small acerage livestock towards building a sustainable lifestyle.  As a hobby farmer, I have less than 5 acres available on which to grow my produce and raise my animals so the need to find livestock suitable for small areas is important to me.

Horses

My two horses, Jackson and Hotrod are a big part of my life.  While I am not sure how much they really provide towards living a sustainable lifestyle, I am very much a horse hobbyist and will always make room for them in my life.

Upcycling and Other Crafts

By nature, I am a very creative and crafty person.  I dabble in a variety of papercrafts, including scrapbooking and making handmade cards.  I also enjoy making many of the things that I have used to decorate my house.  But, my craft hobby has taken a bit of a green turn over the last year or so.  As I became interested in sustainable agriculture, I found that I was also gaining interest in finding ways to green my craft projects.  And then I discovered it, it is called Upcycling.  Have you heard of it?  Basically, upcycling is the process of taking something old and unuseful and repurposing it to make it new and useable.  While the term doesn't always apply to crafty projects, there are many ways to incorporate upcycling in my every day craft projects.
